They are preservatives, some of which are no longer permitted for use in cosmetics (e.g. Isobutylparaben), others suspected of interfering with the endocrine system, although declared safe within certain limits, are cautiously not used to make Goovi formulas.

These are surfactants used in numerous cosmetic products for their cleansing and emulsifying properties. SLS stands for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium lauryl sulfate (INCI name) and SLES for Sodium Lauryl Ester Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (INCI name). They have good cleansing and foaming properties but if used alone they can be irritating, hence the need, when making a detergent, to use a calibrated mix of other surfactants to minimise their irritating potential.

PEGs are synthetic, petroleum-derived compounds (thus very polluting), which are incorporated in cosmetics as emulsifiers to mix water with fatty/oily substances that do not bind in nature. They are also used as surfactants (washing substances) for shampoo-oils because they do not produce much foam but at the same time clean effectively. Although safe in themselves, those with a high degree of ethoxylation may contain dioxane residues, which have been shown to have harmful properties for the body. For these reasons, they are not present in Goovi products.

Cessors are those substances that release molecules of another compound indirectly, through their decomposition or by associating with other elements. During the life cycle of a cosmetic, formaldehyde ceasers naturally degrade and, during this process, tend to release small amounts into the product. These substances are mainly used as preservatives and sterilisers and are permitted by law, which sets a maximum threshold for residual formaldehyde in cosmetics of 0.2%.

Ethanolamines are substances used for their buffering effect, i.e. to adjust the pH of the product formula. Their use in cosmetic products is specifically regulated by European legislation to ensure their safe use in products containing them. Indeed, the ethanolamine used in cosmetics must possess purity characteristics that prevent the risk of reaction with other ingredients present in the product, thus preventing the formation of potentially dangerous substances.

Liquid paraffin is also called mineral oil. It is a liquid mixture of hydrocarbons, which are a group of substances consisting exclusively of carbon and hydrogen atoms: some of them occur naturally in the plant and animal kingdoms, others are generally obtained through petroleum refining processes. Mineral oils have occlusive power and give a moisturising sensation: they form a film on the skin that prevents water from evaporating. This moisturising mechanism has the disadvantage that it does not promote the skin's ability to self-hydrate, an ability that we obtain instead through the use of active plant ingredients. 

In reality, their positive characteristics are also their greatest flaws. As they merely form a film on the surface of skin and hair, they can prevent their normal oxygenation and hydration in the long run: water cannot get out, but neither can it get in. The same goes for the nutrients that go into beauty and health. It follows that, over time, these substances tend to occlude pores and favour pimples, blackheads and millet grains. The hair, on the other hand, will tend to become floppy and heavy and will get dirty more easily.

Are the products 1.4 dioxane tested?

Dioxane is a by-product that is formed during the production phase of certain ingredients such as foaming agents, emulsifiers and solvents and is very harmful to the health of adults and children. The scientific world has long been sounding the alarm (since 2007, especially in America, there have been studies and tests denouncing its dangerousness: the American Food and Drug Administration has conducted skin studies that confirm how this substance can penetrate the skin through preparations in direct contact with the human body, and even the EPA - Environmental Protection Agency - reports its dangerousness) and while waiting for clarity also from the regulatory point of view, the solution is to choose cosmetic products with quality raw materials and that state ‘1,4-Dioxane tested’ on the packaging. Like Goovi products formulated by selecting the ingredients and tested batch after batch to guarantee an almost total absence of this dangerous substance.

The products are nickel tested?

It means that each production batch of each product is tested for the amount of nickel and is only considered compliant if it has a trace content of less than 0.00001%, i.e. 10 times less than what is considered the threshold for allergic reactions in sensitised individuals.

Any colour variations are due to the presence of ingredients of natural origin.

No, there is no alcohol in Goovi products. Some ingredients that are listed as ‘alcohol’ in the inci e.g. cetyl alcohol, are actually fatty substances used to impart emolliency to the skin and stability to emulsions.
 

Benzyl alcohol is a preservative that is active on bacteria, which is why we use it in Goovi products. Alternatively, it can also be contained in fragrances. In the latter case we would only see it explicitly in the inci if the concentration exceeded 0.01% for rinse-on products and 0.001% for leave-on products.

As with all cosmetic products, the PAO (period after opening) is indicated on the packaging. This indicates the length of time that the stability and safety of use of the marketed product is guaranteed on the basis of studies conducted on the formulation.
